Ready to Learn

School Readiness can mean different things for different professionals and agencies. In Sefton, a multi-agency working group defined what School Readiness means for Sefton:

  • Children who are ready to learn.
  • Schools who are ready to receive all children.
  • Settings who are ready to provide strong foundations.
  • Families who are ready to support their child’s learning and development at home.

Sefton believe that children are ‘ready to learn’ when they are resilient and confident, with a keenness to learn and have effective personal and social skills. School readiness not only refers to the attributes of a child but also the roles and responsibilities of families, teachers and practitioners in ensuring children are ready and able to access learning as they enter school and beyond. As part of a multi-disciplinary and multi-agency response School Readiness covers integrated provision from pre-birth to five.

These three strands relate, align and interact with each other, working together to ensure the needs of the child and family are met, the child is school ready and equally settings and schools are ready to welcome the child on the next stage of their learning journey. In order to achieve this, we offer a number of services and training events for: early years and childcare settings, childminders and nursery, Family Well-Being Centres.
