What to do if you have no heating?

If you find yourself in an emergency, no-heat situation (no form of heating in your property) the Council’s Affordable Warmth Team may be able to provide an oil filled radiator, as a temporary measure (subject to availability). Contact the Affordable Warmth Team for this, except during the Christmas shut down when they will be held at the community equipment stores and can be accessed by calling 0151 934 4088.

For more information contact the Affordable Warmth Team on the phone number below or via the email address below.

What to do if you smell gas?

It’s crucial to act quickly in a gas emergency. These are the steps you need to take to stay safe:

  • Get fresh air immediately; make sure you open all doors and windows to ventilate the area.
  • Turn off the gas emergency control valve (also called gas emergency shut off valve) at the meter, unless the meter is located in a basement or cellar or at the LPG bulk tank or storage vessels.
  • Extinguish all naked flames and don’t smoke.
  • Don’t operate electrical switches (including turning light switches on or off) because this can ignite escaping gas.
  • Contact National Gas Emergency service number 0800 111 999 – it’s a free 24-hour phone number.
  • If you’re feeling unwell, visit your GP or hospital immediately and let them know you may have been exposed to carbon monoxide.
  • Don’t turn the gas supply on again until it’s been checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

What to do if there is a power cut?

If your power goes off unexpectedly, check to see if your neighbours still have electricity. If their power is also off, there is a power cut and please contact Scottish Power Energy Networks who are responsible for the electricity in Sefton. If your neighbours still have power but your home doesn't, it's likely there is a problem with your property alone, and you are advised to contact a qualified electrician.

To report a power cut or damage to electricity power lines or substations, call Scottish Power Energy Networks on their free phone number 105.
