Following a fantastic response in 2022, the Southport Eco Centre’s Christmas campaign is returning this Friday, 1^st December.

Sefton Council’s Education Service has once again teamed up with The Atkinson and the cast of the upcoming pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk to help spread some Christmas cheer and some important eco messages about how we can all reduce, reuse, and recycle more over the festive period.

Interactive Calendar and Competition

People are invited to access the interactive advent calendar and open a door on each day, from the 1^st to the 12^th of December, where they can learn from the cast members all the different ways we can be more eco-friendly.

Those getting involved can download the entry form and use the facts revealed by the cast members to be in with a chance of winning a family ticket to the show. All entries will also receive learning credits towards Children’s University.

Darren Lloyd, resident teacher at the Eco Centre and designer of the campaign said:

“Christmas is a fantastic time for our children, but it is also a testing time for our planet due to amount of waste generated during the period.

“Our young people have very real concerns about the impact we are having on our planet and this campaign gives them an opportunity to engage in a fun way while helping spread some extremely important messages.

“The response to last year’s campaign was phenomenal so we hope our schools and communities will get behind it once again.”

Lesley Worswick, Chief Executive at Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority said: “A considerable amount of waste is created this time of year, but this year we’re reminding residents that Christmas doesn’t need to cost the earth. We’re proud to support the Southport Eco Centre’s 12 Days of Christmas campaign to show residents the importance of having an eco-friendly Christmas.

“We’re asking residents to think before you buy, buy just what you need and reuse or recycle everything you can. We can all reduce the amount of waste we produce and help fight against climate change.”

Cllr Paulette Lappin, Sefton Council Cabinet Member for Regulatory, Compliance and Corporate Services said:

“This is a great opportunity for young people in Sefton to learn some important eco-messages that are touched with the magic of Christmas.

“And for them to win the chance of a family trip to Jack and the Beanstalk at The Atkinson at the same time.”

The campaign has been designed and created by the Southport Eco Centre teachers and is part of the Centre’s longstanding partnership work with the Merseyside Waste and Recycling Authority, supporting the climate emergency declaration by Sefton Council and the call for positive action.
