A sell-out crowd have been wowed by one of the biggest ever British Musical Fireworks Championship displays in Southport.
10,000 people filled Victoria Park on Saturday evening (September 23rd) as six professional pyrotechnics companies battled it out to be crowned the 2023 Champions.
Organised by Sefton Council’s dedicated Tourism team, the two-day show was quickly reorganised into a one night spectacular following dangerously high winds leading to a cancellation of the Friday displays.
With only a handful of hours to replan, organisers worked extremely hard to ensure all competitors had the chance to take to the stage, earning high praise from those who attended the event.
During the day and throughout the evening, Southport Town Centre was heaving with visitors from the early afternoon, with bars, restaurants and shops all feeling the economic boost that the Championship brings to the area.
Speaking following the event resident Steve Hitchton said: "It was an absolutely fantastic evening and in my opinion every single display was the winner.
"This was an exceptional year and a superbly organised event and I'm already counting down to 2024."
Describing the displays as a 'feast for the eyes' Janine Rushworth said of the night: "It was a phenomenal evening and every single company excelled themselves.
"I was in awe of them all and they all brought something different to the table."
After an intense round of judging it was revealed that the third display of the evening by Imperial Lotus Southeast was the best of the best and they were duly crowned winners.
Cllr Marion Atkinson, Sefton Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Skills, said: "Not only do I want to congratulate Imperial Lotus but I want to give a huge thanks to the competitors, our Tourism team, concessionaires and other staff who worked so hard to make Saturday one of the biggest and best nights ever.
"Any initial disappointment of having to cancel the Friday evening was quickly forgotten and the displays our sell-out crowds were treated to lit up the skies across Southport.
"I am very proud that we are able to put on incredible events in Sefton each year and a special mention just go to our tireless Tourism team who are already turning their attentions towards next years events.
“Not only was the show a huge success but Southport was extremely busy with visitors and shoppers throughout the day with people taking full advantage of the fantastic and varied offer that the resort has.”
