An iron Tree of Hope, in memory of those that had passed away from cancer, has been installed at Thornton Garden of Rest, near Crosby.
Lasting memory
Funded by North West Cancer Research, the Tree of Hope is a lasting memory of the deceased and their families who have left a legacy in their will to cancer research. Families can purchase a leaf on the tree in memory of their loved ones.
Sefton Mayor Cllr June Burns and Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Cleansing and Street Scene, Cllr Peter Harvey, joined Alastair Richards, CEO of North West Cancer Research and donors’ families for a dedication ceremony on Saturday 22nd March.
Partnership
Welcoming the Tree of Hope’s installation, Sefton Mayor Cllr Burns said: “It’s great that we have been able to work in partnership with North West Cancer Research on this project.
“The Tree of Hope’s presence at Thornton Garden of Rest will help visitors on their own bereavement journeys as well as helping to raise funds for North West Cancer Research’s important work.”
Permanent memorial
People can create a lasting memory of their loved one and support cancer research by purchasing a leaf, costing £250 on the Tree of Hope. The metal leaf will be engraved with the deceased person’s name and hung on the tree as a permanent memorial.

Heartwarming
Alastair Richards, CEO of North West Cancer Research said: “It’s been great watching this project get off the ground and come to life. We’re proud to be able to present the people of Sefton and beyond with a place they can come and sit with loved ones they’ve lost.
“The support we have received so far, especially from Sefton Council and our supporters who have been the first to buy a leaf, has been heartwarming to see. We know this will be a special place for so many people. Every memory leaf purchased for the Tree of Hope is directly funding cancer research projects right here in our region, and supporting us in our mission for a cancer-free future.”
Comfort
Cllr Harvey said: “West Cancer Research’s Tree of Hope enhances the memorial garden for all visitors and can provide comfort for people who have lost a loved one or friend.
“And at the same time, by buying leaves on the tree people are providing the charity with vital funding for their research.”
Charities
The Tree of Hope is funded and managed by North West Cancer research. Installation of the tree on site at Thornton Garden of Rest was paid for through a Burials and Cremations Service scheme that sees a proportion of money raised through the recycling of metals from the cremation process donated to nominated charities.
